Passage 2
As museums worldwide celebrate the 250th birthday of J.M.W. Turner, it is time to reappraise his celebrated painting, The Fighting Temeraire. Turner's painting, first unveiled in 1839, became a national sensation, once voted Britain's favorite painting and has now featured on £20 banknotes. However, the widely accepted interpretation of its message may, in fact, contradict Turner's true intentions.
The title refers to a 98-gun British warship, HMS Temeraire, which played a heroic role during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1838, the ship was dismantled, and Turner's painting depicts her being towed down the River Thames by a steam-powered tugboat. Many observers interpret the work nostalgically: the Temeraire as the hero and the tugboat as the villain, insinuating faded national glory. In a sense, The Fighting Temeraire indeed achieves Turner's ambition to gain his unprecedented popularity by harnessing people's sense of national pride.
Turner, however, was in fact fascinated by new technologies. In this beloved and well-known painting, the tugboat represents the transformative power of industry and modernity. Unlike his rival John Constable, whose works often romanticized rural England, Turner embraced the irreversible changes of the industrial age. He believed artists had a responsibility to discover beauty and significance in newness, capturing objects and experiences previously absent from traditional art.
Through this approach, Turner created a painting that celebrates both national pride and modern progress, leaving a legacy of insight into human experience and historical change.
