Q1: What preparation procedures shall be carried out before departure?
A:
1. One hour prior to SBE, the following shall be an entry made in the Bell Book and verify:
(1) Main engine telegraph and ship's clock.
(2) Emergency main engine telegraph.
(3) Steering gear operation. Both steering gear power units shall be put into operation.
2. The main engine cylinder shall be fed cylinder oil and the main engine shall be turned by engaging the turning gear for about 10 minutes then be disengaged.
3. The stand-by diesel engine generator shall be started and put into service.
4. The necessary pumps shall be started.
5. Starting manifold drain valves shall be shut and the starting air outlet valve of the air reservoirs shall be opened.
6. After confirming with the Duty Officer that the propeller and gangway are clear and cargo work has been completed the main engine shall be air blown on in ahead and astern directions from the control console in the engine control room.
7. The main engine indicator cocks shall be closed after the main engine is blown through.
